A taste of Bollywood!!!

Bollywood!

Movie-posters like this one are a common sight in India. "Bollywood" is what India's popular, over-the-top Bombay-based Hindi language film industry commonly known as. The term, I am told has made its way to the Oxford English dictionary. Those are 4 of our biggest current stars in the poster.....Poor Shahrukh Khan's (at the right) dapper suit has been crumpled thanx to the rains..:DD I never got around to watching this movie...and I don't think I ever will despite its "hit" status and star-cast...Nevertheless, I shot this image while I was back at home last summer. Tho' am no supporter of vandalizing our walls thus, I still miss such familiar sights and more here...half a hemisphere away from home!!!

Update: PS. For all those who have seen the movie and it left a distaste in their mouth and commented rather vehemently on the post :D, I never meant I miss watching this movie, for crying out loud. All I meant was I miss familiar sights from home..........phew!!!! :)

How nice to know you are a bi-cultural (multi-cultural) girl.

I've never seen any Bollywood cinema and I think I'm missing something.

Thanks for your kind words today over at my blog.

Don't even think of watching this movie!!! I saw about 30 mins of it last night and it was sheer torture.

C.R.A.P!!!

Let me tell you that you are not missing anything by not watching this movie. I have seen part of it and in all that the major effort goes in dressing the cast as beautifullly as possible and no attention is paid to the story or the plot.It is a serious subject of extra marital affairs but the whole approach is very childish. You can see the couples fighting like teenagers, not like people who are having marital problems.

Hum, these movies are not shown here, and please expound, I read they are influencing many people there, negatively, like women spending money on treatments to have a lighter skin etc., is that true? Thanks so much.

I don't miss watching this movie...I don't intend to watch this movie, for cryin' out loud!!! I have heard enuf no. of times how crappy the movie is.....the movie was a big hit while I was home for my vacations and so the poster!!! and I meant, I miss the familiar sights ......and Cris, Bollywood is known to churn out, as i said earlier in my post over-the-top, melodramatic movies.....but there has been some sensible cinema emerging from the industry too, tho' not as often . About negative effects, every film industry has its negative effects and Bollywood sure has contributed to its own set of negative trends in our societies........and hey, i saw City of Gods from Brazil sometime last year and totally loved the movie :)

:)... so true... personally I feel all these things like vandalizing the walls etc.... its people taking themselves too seriously... you have to live with some problems if you need a little charm in life... a little juice... otherwise we are so adept at making everything look so similar... and boring..

As far as bollywood is concerned, what I believe people donot understand is, that bollywood does not take itself too seriously... neither does its audience. Its audience is different... it is not lack of talent or skill.... The skill and talent peeks out many a time even in the crappiest of the movies...

Frankly, in my experience bollywood is what most indians want... even when a good movie is made no one goes and watches....

sorry for the lecture :DD

I like the term Bollywood. Haven't seen any of those types of movies but I can understand how things like that can remind you of your home. Thanks for sharing your culture with us.

i got my first taste of "bollywood" films whilst in the hotel room in siliguri. wow!!! that's all i have to say. =]

this last year when i traveled from kolkota to bagdogra, i read in the telegraph about a bollywood couple, don't remember the names, but i shook my head thinking how it's the same as it is in hollywood.

I've seen some "Bollywood" films. I think I've even seen the girl on the right in some of them, she's so Beautiful!

I never knew that "KANK" was an acronym for "kabhi Alwida na Kehna". I do not watch bollywood movies at all, and while I was trying to make some bollywood conversation with my close friend who enjoys hindi cinema, I kept asking her about "Kank" and she seemed a bit confused! Now I know why.

Chica, Cienna, and Cali said...

sarad : am glad u like SRK!!! Arka can't stand him ..so we hardly watch his movies :( :(

chad: Am not surprised, that u have had some kinda experience with Bollywood!! I remember seeing some Indian wedding pics on your blog. and the actress on the right is Rani Mukherji..yes she's beautiful and pretty good an actress, for that matter!!!

jas : :DDDDDD...this movie i believe is such a disaster......that even my undying love for SRK cud not make me go watch it!!! :)

I've seen a few Bollywood films, and I believe they are meant to be silly, full of song and dance. One thing I find interesting is that there is never any kissing. However, read this interesting article about some recent "kissing" going on! Apparently, you can be arrested for this???
